JUST In: Wontumi sues UTV demanding Ghc25million in damages despite NPP big wigs’ intervention

In what is clear turf war over the future of Twi broadcasting in Ghana, Ashanti Regional Chairman for the New Patriotic Party (NPP) Bernard Antwi Boasiako, has ignored an apology from UTV over defamatory comments made against him on their platform and is demanding Ghc25million from the station in damages.

MyNewsGh.com is reliably informed that the management of United Television (UTV) even ahead of their apology also fell on senior NPP figures through Fadda Dickson to plead on their behalf for Chairman Wontumi not to sue them as he threatened to.

The station’s apology and pleadings are in relation to the recent appearance of Afia Schwarzenegger on its United Showbiz hosted by Nana Ama McBrown where she passed remarks allegedly defamatory and insulting of the person of Chairman Wontumi who is already in court with her on a similar subject.

According to sources who have sighted the suit, the Hostess of the show for the night, Nana Ama McBrown either encouraged or egged on the co-defendant Valentina to continue to insult Antwi Boasiako knowing same allegations to be without any proof whatsoever.

Chairman Wontumi said irreparable damage has been done to his person by UTV availing their platform to the said Valentina AKA Afia Schwarzenegger to malign his good name and hard won reputation by virtue of which he was overwhelmingly re-elected Regional Chairman of the NPP.

Earlier, Chairman Wontumi himself spoke about the issue on Accra-based Metro Television, where he hinted that he was not accepting any form of apology from the Television station.

“Paul I don’t want to talk about it because the thing is in court and you are a student of law so you don’t need to talk about it,” he said. When Paul decided to show it to him he retorted “you can show but it doesn’t mean I can see. If you are showing it means you are showing. Paul I’m saying the things that are in court I don’t talk about it,” he said.

More Elders of the NPP are expected to be drafted in to help the management of UTV avoid what many legal pundits is easy money for Wontumi to collect.
